التَّواضُع / Humbleness

1ـ عن رسول اللّه‏ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): مالي لا أرى علَيكُم حَلاوَةَ العِبادَةِ ؟! قالوا: وما حَلاوَةُ العِبادَةِ ؟ قالَ: التَّواضُعُ.
1– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Why do I not see in you the sweetness of worship?!’ They asked, ‘What is the sweetness of worship?’ He said, ‘Humbleness.’

2ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إنّ أفضَلَ النّاسِ عَبدا مَن تَواضَعَ عَن رِفعَةٍ.
2– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘The best of people is a worshipper who humbles himself the more his rank increases.’

التَّواضُع

3ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): طُوبى لِمَن تَواضَعَ للّه‏ِ في غَيرِ مَنقَصَةٍ، وأذَلَّ نَفسَهُ في غَيرِ مَسكَنَةٍ.
3– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Blessed be he who humbles himself before Allah for no deficiency, and who degrades himself without poverty.’

4ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا حَسَبَ كالتَّواضُعِ.
4– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘There is no sufficiency like humbleness.’
[Nahj al-Balagha, Saying 113]

5ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): زِينَةُ الشَّريفِ التَّواضُعُ .
5– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The adornment of the noble is humbleness.’

6ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): التَّواضُعُ زَكاةُ الشَّرَفِ .
6- Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Humbleness spreads virtue.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 522]

7ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): علَيكَ بِالتَّواضُعِ ؛ فإنّهُ مِن أعظَمِ العِبادَةِ .
7– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘You must be humble, as it is one of the greatest
[forms of] worship.’

8ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) ـ في صِفَةِ المُتَّقينَ ـ: ومَلبَسُهُمُ الاقتِصادُ، ومَشيُهُمُ التَّواضُعُ .
8– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘It suffices for a man…in his humbleness to know his own worth.’

9ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): التَّواضُعُ يَنشُرُ الفَضيلَةَ .
9– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘He who goes to a wealthy person and humbles himself before him because of his wealth, a third of his faith goes.’
[Nahj al-Balagha, Saying 228]

10ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): ما أحسَنَ تَواضُعَ الأغنياءِ لِلفُقَراءِ طَلَباً لِما عِندَ اللّه‏ِ، وأحسَنُ مِنهُ تِيهُ الفُقَراءِ علَى الأغنِياءِ اتِّكالاً علَى اللّه‏ِ.
10– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘How good is the humbleness of the wealthy before the poor in seeking what is with Allah, and better than this is the pride of the poor before the wealthy in relying solely on Allah.’

11ـ الإمامُ الرِّضا (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): التَّواضُعُ أن تُعطِيَ النّاسَ ما تُحِبُّ أن تُعطاهُ.
11– Imam al-Rida (AS) said, ‘Humbleness is to give to people what you yourself like to be given.’

12ـ الإمامُ العسكريُّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): التَّواضُعُ نِعمَةٌ لا يُحسَدُ علَيها.
12– Imam al-`Aaskari (AS) said, ‘Humbleness is a blessing that cannot be envied.’
[Tuhaf al-‘Uqul, p. 489]

مِن عَلاماتِ التَّواضُعِ / Signs of Humbleness

13ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إنَّ مِن التَّواضُعِ أن يَجلِسَ الرّجُلُ دُونَ شَرَفِهِ.
13– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Humbleness is when a man sits in a place lower than his rank.’

14ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ عن آبائهِ (عَلَيهمُ الّسَلامُ): إنّ مِن التَّواضُعِ أن يَرضى الرّجُلُ بِالمَجلِسِ دُونَ المَجلِسِ، وأن يُسَلِّمَ على مَن يَلقى، وأن يَترُكَ المِراءَ وإن كانَ مُحِقّا، ولا يُحِبَّ أن يُحمَدَ علَى التَّقوى .
14– Imam al-Sadiq (AS), from his fathers (AS) said, ‘Humbleness is for a man to be content to sit in any place and not a particular place, to greet those he meets, to leave disputation even if he is right, and to not like to be praised for piety.’

ثَمَرَةُ التَّواضُعِ / The Fruit of Humbleness

15ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إنّ التَّواضُعَ يَزيدُ صاحِبَهُ رِفعَةً، فتَواضَعُوا يَرفَعْكُمُ اللّه‏ُ .
15– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Humbleness increases the rank of that person, so humble yourselves and Allah will raise you.’

16ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): مَن تَواضَعَ للّه‏ِ رَفَعَهُ اللّه‏ُ، فهُو في نَفسِهِ ضَعيفٌ وفي أعيُنِ النّاسِ عَظيمٌ، ومَن تَكبَّرَ وَضَعَهُ اللّه‏ُ، فهُو في أعيُنِ النّاسِ صَغيرٌ وفي نَفسِهِ كَبيرٌ ؛ حتّى لَهُو أهوَنُ علَيهِم مِن كَلبٍ أو خِنْزيرٍ .
16– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘He who humbles himself for Allah, Allah will raise him such that he is weak in himself but strong in the eyes of others. And he who is haughty, Allah will degrade him such that he will be small in the eyes of others and big in his own, until he will be more despicable to them than a pig or a dog.’

17ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): ثَمَرَةُ التَّواضُعِ المَحَبّةُ، ثَمَرَةُ الكِبرِ المَسَبَّةُ .
17– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The fruit of humbleness is love, and the fruit of pride is abuse.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 4613-4614]

18ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): التَّواضُعُ يَكسوكَ المَهابَةَ .
18– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Humbleness clothes you in dignity.’
[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 77, p. 287, no. 1]

19ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): بِخَفضِ الجَناحِ تَنتَظِمُ الاُمورُ.
19– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘With the lowering of one’s wing are affairs organised.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 4302]

20ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): التَّواضُعُ يَنشُرُ الفَضيلَةَ، التَّكبُّرُ يُظهِرُ الرَّذيلَةَ.
20– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Humbleness spreads virtue and haughtiness shows up vice.’

21ـ الإمامُ الكاظمُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إنّ الزَّرعَ يَنبُتُ في السَّهلِ ولا يَنبُتُ في الصَّفا ؛ فكذلكَ الحِكمَةُ تَعمُرُ في قَلبِ المُتَواضِعِ، ولا تَعمُرُ في قَلبِ المُتَكبِّرِ الجَبّارِ ؛ لأنّ اللّه‏َ جَعلَ التَّواضُعَ آلَةَ العَقلِ، وجَعَلَ التَّكبُّرَ مِن آلَةِ الجَهلِ.
21– Imam al-Kazim (AS) said, ‘A plant grows on level ground and not on the hard terrain, and similarly wisdom flourishes in the heart of the humble, and does not flourish in the heart of the haughty and overbearing, because Allah made humbleness the instrument of the intellect and haughtiness the instrument of ignorance.’

22ـ الإمامُ الكاظمُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إنّ اللّه‏َ لَم يَرفَعِ المُتَواضِعينَ بقَدرِ تَواضُعِهِم،ولكنْ‏رَفَعَهُم‏ بِقَدرِ عَظَمَتِهِ ومَجدِهِ.
22– Imam al-Kazim (AS) said, ‘Allah does not raise the humble in proportion to their humbleness, rather He raises them according to His own Greatness and Glory.’

ما يُستَعانُ بِهِ عَلَى التَّواضُعِ / What is used to Acquire Humbleness

23ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا يُستَعانُ ... علَى التَّواضُعِ إلّا بسَلامَةِ الصَّدرِ .
23– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Humbleness cannot be resorted to… unless the heart is healthy.’

24ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): التَّواضُعُ ثَمَرَةُ العِلمِ .
24– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Humbleness is the fruit of knowledge.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 301]

25ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا يَنبَغي لِمَن عَرَفَ عَظَمَةَ اللّه‏ِ أن يَتَعَظَّمَ ؛ فإنّ رِفعَةَ الّذينَ يَعلَمونَ ما عَظَمَتُهُ أن يَتَواضَعُوا لَهُ .
25– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘It is not appropriate for one who knows the Greatness of Allah to consider himself as great, for verily the elevation of those who know His Greatness lies in humbling themselves before Him.’
