التَّوكّل


TRUST (IN ALLAH)




التَّوكُّـلُ / Trust (in Allah)

1. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: الإيمانُ لَهُ أركانٌ أربعَةٌ: التَّوكُّلُ علَى اللّه، وتَفويضُ الأمرِ إلَى اللّه، والرِّضا بِقَضاء اللّه، والتِّسليمُ لأمرِ اللّه عز و جل.
1. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Faith has four pillars: trust in Allah, handing over matters to Allah, satisfaction with the decree of Allah, and submission to the command of Allah.’

2. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: التَّوكُّلُ حِصنُ الحِكمةِ.
2. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Trust is the fortress of wisdom.’

3. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: التَّوكُّلُ علَى اللّه نَجاةٌ مِن كُلِّ سُوءٍ، وحِرزٌ مِن كُلِّ عَدُوٍّ.
3. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Trust in Allah is the salvation from all evil and a protection from every enemy.’

4. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: في التَّوكُّلِ حَقيقَةُ الإيقانِ.
4. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘In trust lies the reality of certainty.’

تفسيرُ التَّوكُّلِ / The Explanation of Trust

5. جَبرئيلُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ لَمّا سألَهُ النّبيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ عنِ التَّوكُّلِ علَى اللّه: العِلمُ بأنّ الَمخلوقَ لا يَضُرُّ ولا يَنفَعُ، ولا يُعطي ولا يَمنَعُ، واستِعمالُ اليَأسِ مِن الخَلقِ، فإذا كانَ العَبدُ كذلكَ لَم يَعمَلْ لأحَدٍ سِوَى اللّه، ولَم يَرْجُ ولَم يَخَفْ سِوَى اللّه، ولَم يَطمَعْ في أحَدٍ سِوَى اللّه، فهذا هُو التَّوكُّلُ.
5. The archangel Gabriel, when the Prophet (SAWA) asked him about trusting in Allah, said, ‘
[It is] to know that a creature can neither harm nor benefit, nor give nor deny
[of itself], and it is to display hopelessness in creation, so when a servant is such, then he will not do anything for anyone other than Allah, will neither hope nor fear in anyone other than Allah, and will not seek other than Allah – this is complete trust.’

6. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: مَنِ اكتَوى أو استَرقى، فَقَد بَرِئَ مِن التَّوكُّلِ.
6. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘He who cauterises or resorts to witchcraft has turned away from trust
[in Allah].’

7. أبو بَصيرٍ عن الإمامِ الصّادقِ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: لَيسَ شَيءٌ إلاّ ولَهُ حَدٌّ، قلتُ: جُعِلتُ فِداكَ، فما حَدُّ التَّوَكُّلِ ؟ قالَ: اليَقينُ . قلتُ: فما حَدُّ اليَقينِ ؟ قالَ: ألاّ تَخافَ مَعَ اللّه شَيئا.
7. Abu Basir, narrating from Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Nothing exists without a limit.’ I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you, what is the limit of trust
[in Allah]?’ He said, ‘Certainty.’ I said, ‘So what is the limit of certainty?’ He said, ‘That you do not fear anything apart from Allah.’

ثَمَرةُ التَّوكُّلِ / The Fruit of Trust

8. لُقمانُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ لابنِهِ وهُو يَعِظُهُ: يا بُنَيَّ، ثِقْ باللّه عز و جل ثُمّ سَلْ في النّاسِ: هَل مِن أحَدٍ وَثِقَ باللّه فلَم يُنجِهِ ؟! يا بُنَيَّ، تَوَكَّلْ علَى اللّه ثُمّ سَلْ في النّاسِ: مَن ذا الّذي تَوَكَّلَ علَى اللّه فلَم يَكفِهِ ؟!.
8. Luqman (AS) said to his son, advising him, ‘O my son, rely in Allah and then ask people: “Is there anyone who relies in Allah and He does not save him?!” O son, trust in Allah and then ask people: “Who is there among you that has placed his trust in Allah and He has not sufficed him?”

9. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: مَن أحَبَّ أن يَكونَ أقوَى النّاسِ فلْيَتَوكَّلْ علَى اللّه تعالى.
9. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Whoever would like to be the strongest of people should place his trust in Allah, most High.’

10. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: مَـن تَـوَكَّلَ عـلَى اللّه ذَلَّت لَهُ الصِّعابُ، وتَسهَّلَت علَيهِ الأسبابُ.
10. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever places his trust in Allah, hardships will become easy for him and all means will be simplified for him.’

11. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: مَن وَثِقَ باللّه أراهُ السُّرورَ، ومَن تَوَكَّلَ علَيهِ كَفاهُ الاُمورَ.
11. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever relies on Allah, He will show him happiness, and whoever places his trust in Him, He will suffice him in all things.’

12. الإمامُ الباقرُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: مَن تَوَكَّلَ علَى اللّه لا يُغلَبْ، ومَنِ اعتَصمَ باللّه لا يُهزَم.
12. Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Whoever trusts in Allah will never be defeated, and whoever grasps onto Allah will never be put to flight.’

13. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: إنّ الغِنى والعِـزَّ يَـجُولانِ، فـإذا ظَفِرا بمَوضِعِ التَّوكُّلِ أوطَنا.
13. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Wealth and honour wander around, and when they reach a place where there is trust in Allah they remain there.’

14. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ لِمعاويةَ بنِ وَهبٍ: مَن اُعطِيَ التَّوَكُّلَ اُعطِيَ الكِفايَةَ، ثُمّ قالَ: أتَلَوتَ كِتابَ اللّه عز و جل «و مَن يَتَوكَّلْ علَى اللّه فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ».
14. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said to Mu`awiya b. Wahab, ‘Whoever has been given trust has been given sufficiency. He then said, ‘Have you not recited from the Book of Allah: "And whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him."

15. الإمامُ الجوادُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: الثِّقَةُ باللّه تعالى ثَمَنٌ لِكُلِ غالٍ، وسُلَّمٌ إلى كُلِّ عالٍ.
15. Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, ‘Reliance on Allah is the price for every expensive matter and a ladder to everything high.’

أدبُ التَّوكُّلِ / The Etiquette of Trust

16. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ لِرجُلٍ قالَ لَهُ: أعقِلُها وأتَوَكَّلُ، أو اُطلِقُها وأتَوَكَّلُ؟: اِعقِلْها وتَوَكَّلْ.
16. The Prophet (SAWA) said to a person who asked him, ‘Should I tie it
[i.e. my camel] and trust in Allah or leave it loose and trust in Allah?’ He said, ‘Tie it and then trust.’

17. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ لِقَومٍ رآهُم لا يَزرَعُونَ: ما أنتُم ؟ قالوا: نَحنُ المُتَوَكِّلونَ، قالَ :لا، بَل أنتُمُ المُتَّكِلونَ.
17. The Prophet (SAWA) said to a group of people not planting, ‘What are you doing?’ They said, ‘We are placing our trust in Allah.’ He said, ‘No, rather you are the dependents.’

18. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ لابنِهِ محمّدِ بنِ الحَنَفيهِ لَمّا أعطاهُ الرّايَهَ يَومَ الجَمَلِ: تَزولُ الجِبالُ ولا تَزُلْ، عَضَّ على ناجِذِكَ، أعِرِ اللّه جُمجُمَتَكَ، تِدْ في الأرضِ قَدَمَكَ، اِرْمِ بِبَصَرِكَ أقصَى القَومِ، وغُضَّ بَصَرَكَ، واعلَمْ أنَّ النَّصرَ مِن عِندِ اللّه سبحانَهُ.
18. Imam Ali (AS) said to his son Muhammad b. al-Hanafiyya when he gave him the standard in the Battle of the Camel, ‘Mountains may move from their position but you should not move from yours. Grit your teeth. Lend to Allah your head
[i.e. give yourself to Allah]. Plant your feet firmly in the ground. Have your eye on the remotest foe and lower your gaze, and know that victory is from Allah, the Glorified.’

19. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ لِقَومٍ أصِحّاءَ جالِسينَ في زاويةِ المَسجِدِ: مَن أنتُم ؟ قالوا: نحنُ المُتَوَكِّلونَ . قالَ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: لا، بَل أنتُمُ المُتَأكِّلَهُ.
19. Imam Ali (AS) said to a group of healthy people sitting down in a corner of the mosque
[not working], ‘Who are you?’ to which they replied, ‘We are the ones who place our trust in Allah.’ He said, ‘No, rather you are the abraded
[i.e. whose talents have been corroded by idleness].’

20. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: لا تَدَعْ طَلَبَ الرِّزقِ مِن حِلِّهِ فإنّهُ أعوَنُ لَك على دِينِكَ، واعقِلْ راحِلَتَكَ وتَوَكَّلْ.
20. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Do not leave the seeking of sustenance from its permitted sources, for it is more helpful to you in your religion, and tie your riding camel, and then trust in Allah.’

21. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: إنّ قَوما مِـن أصـحابِ رسولِ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ لَمّا نَزَلَت: «و مَن يَتَّقِ اللّه يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجا و يَرْزُقْهُ مِن حَيْثُ لا يَحْتَسِبُ» أغلَقوا الأبوابَ وأقبَلوا علَى العِبادَةِ وقالوا: قد كُفِينا، فبَلَغَ ذلكَ النَّبيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِفأرسَلَ إلَيهِم فقالَ: ما حَمَلَكُم على ما صَنَعتُم ؟ قالوا: يا رسولَ اللّه ! تُكُفِّلَ لَنا بأرزاقِنا فأقبَلنا علَى العِبادَةِ، فقالَ: إنّهُ مَن فَعَلَ ذلكَ لَم يُستَجَبْ لَهُ، علَيكُم بالطَّلَبِ.
21. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘A group from the companions of the Prophet (SAWA), when the verse: "And whoever is wary of Allah, He shall make a way out for him, and provide for him from whence he does not reckon" descended, locked their doors and engaged themselves in worship, saying, ‘We have been sufficed.’ The Prophet (SAWA) found out about this so he sent for them and said, ‘What made you do what you are doing?’ They said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Our sustenance is being taken care of so we have occupied ourselves in worship.’ He said, ‘Whoever does this, his call will not be answered
[by Allah]. You must seek your livelihood.’

الانقِطاعُ إلى غيرِ اللّه / Dedicating Oneself to Other than Allah

22. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: لا تَتَّكِلْ إلى غَيرِ اللّه فيَكِلَكَ اللّه إلَيهِ.
22. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Do not rely on other than Allah, for Allah will relegate you to him.’
[Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v. 11, p. 217, no. 1270]

23. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: يَقولُ اللّه عز و جل: ما مِن مَخلوقٍ يَعتَصِمُ بمَخلوقٍ دُوني إلاّ قَطَعتُ أبوابَ السَّماواتِ والأرضِ دُونَهُ، فإن دَعاني لَم اُجِبْهُ، وإن سَألَني لَم اُعطِهِ.
23. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Allah Almighty has said, ‘Any creature who resorts to another creature instead of Me, I will shut the doors of Heaven and earth from him, such that if he calls Me, I will not answer him, and if he requests from Me, I will not give him.’

24. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: إيّـاكَ والثِّقَةَ بـنَفسِكَ؛ فإنَّ ذلكَ مِن أكبَرِ مَصائدِ الشَّيطانِ.
24. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Beware of being completely self-reliant, for that is one of the greatest snares of Satan.’
